(WARRENSBURG,
Mo.) – The 2004 Central Missouri State University baseball team not only got
the job done on the diamond, it also had its share of success in the
classroom. Six Mules were named to the
MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.
Named to the team for the Mules were junior catcher Tommy
Bryant (mass communications major from Lenexa, Kan.), senior pitcher Nick
Denning (finance major from Springfield, Mo.), senior pitcher Brad Doering (finance
major from Jefferson City, Mo.), sophomore outfielder David Highfill (undecided on a major from Edgerton, Kan.),
senior shortstop Andy Mayfield (finance major from Blue Springs, Mo.),
and junior pitcher Danny Powers (secondary education major from Carl
Junction, Mo.).
The Mules are currently competing in the NCAA Division II
National Championships in Montgomery, Ala.
Bryant, a second-team All-MIAA pick, is batting .374 with
10 home runs, seven doubles, and 48 runs batted in. Highfill missed
much of the season with a shoulder injury, but is batting .281 with a homer and
two doubles, while Mayfield (a first-team All-MIAA and second-team All-Region
pick) is batting .344 with 10 doubles, two triples and a home run.
Denning is 6-1 in 2004 with a 2.70 earned run average,
while Doering is 1-0 with a save and a 3.91 ERA. Powers was named to the All-Central Regional
Tournament team, and is 5-2 with a 3.43 earned run average while striking out
79 in 63 innings pitched.
To be named to the MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll
teams, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or
better at the qualifying institution; must have at least two terms of
attendance at the member school, excluding summer sessions; must be a
sophomore, junior, or senior in athletic eligibility; and may not be inactive
due to redshirt or hardship qualification.
