Former Mules' Baseball Players to be Honored

Warrensburg, Mo. (Jan. 11, 2001) -- Two former Central Missouri State University baseball players will be honored this Saturday at the Greater St. Louis Major League Baseball Scouts Association Awards Ceremony in St. Louis, Mo.

Among the awards the scouting organization will be presenting are: College Pitcher of the Year, which will go to Josh Reynolds, and Minor League Player of the Year, which will go to Morgan Burkhart. The group recognizes outstanding baseball performances each season by athletes and coaches in Missouri and Illinois.

Reynolds, a graduate of Jefferson City (Mo.) High School, was 12-2 with a 2.64 ERA as a junior for the Mules last season. He struck out a school-record 85 and walked just 24 in 99 innings, while his 32 wins in three seasons set CMSU and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association records for career pitching wins.

Reynolds was the MIAA MVP and a unanimous first-team all-conference pick, as well as a first-team all-region and first-team All-America selection. He was drafted in the third round of the 2000 free-agent draft by the New York Mets and signed a minor league contract.

Burkhart, a graduate of Hazelwood West High School in suburban St. Louis, was a key member of the Mules' 1994 NCAA Division II national championship team. While he spent most of last season at Pawtucket (R.I.) in Class AAA, he made his major league debut with the Boston Red Sox June 27. He played 25 games with the Red Sox, hitting .288 with four home runs and 18 RBI.

At Pawtucket, he hit .255 with 23 home runs and 77 RBI. His appearance with Red Sox made him the first former Central Missouri State baseball player to appear in a major league game.
