| Mules' Corey Clinefelter Named Academic
All-American Warrensburg, Mo. (June 5, 2001) -- Central
Missouri State University pitcher Corey Clinefelter can add one more honor to his
outstanding senior season this spring.
He is a first-team selection on the Verizon College Division Academic All-America
Baseball Team. The senior right-hander from Independence, Mo. (Truman H.S.) graduated in
May with a bachelor's degree in marketing and had a 3.46 overall grade point average.
Clinefelter was 13-1 with a 3.09 earned run average this season. He helped lead the
Mules' to their best record in school history at 53-10 and a runner-up finish in NCAA
Division II. He led the team in starts (16), complete games (4), innings pitched (107 2/3)
and strikeouts (79). His final CMSU appearance produced a complete-game win over the
University North Florida in the semifinals of the national tournament in Montgomery, Ala.
Earlier Clinefelter had been named to the first-team of the NCAA Division II
All-America Team selected by the American Baseball Coaches Association. He is the only
player in Division II to be selected to the first-team All-America Team and the first-team
Academic All-America Team.
Clinefelter's other honors this season include being named Central Region Pitcher of
the Year and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Pitcher of the Year.
Included in his 13 wins was a no-hitter Mar. 5 against East Central University.
For his career, Clinefelter finished with a 30-4 record and a 3.74 earned run average.
His total of 30 wins ties him for second in career victories at Central Missouri. He ranks
second in career innings pitched (271 1/3) and fifth in career strikeouts (188). His 2001
season totals for wins, strikeouts and innings pitched all rank as the second-best
single-season marks in CMSU history.
Clinefelter is the Mules' first Academic All-America baseball selection since
designated hitter Brayden Whitney was named in 1998 and the fifth Mules' baseball player
to earn first-team Academic All-America recognition. Overall the Mules' baseball program
has had a total of 13 players receive Academic All-America recognition. |
