CMSU Golfers Shine During Summer of 2005

On July 26 in Byron, Minn, Jon Sauer, a sophomore from St. Cloud, Minn., qualified for the United States Amateur Championship at Sommerby Golf Club by shooting a 146 (76/70) to earn medalist honors in the regional qualifier to advance to the championship. The U S Amateur is the largest and most prestigious event in the world for amateur golfers. To make the field is an accomplishment in itself.

Jon will travel to Ardmore, Pa., to play the historic Merion Golf Club on August 22-28.  He will play 2 practice rounds and then begin the stroke play portion of the event, which will then be cut to 64 players to start match play.  Match play is much like the NCAA basketball bracket which places each player by seed. They will play one on one against each other until there are two players left for the final match. The winner of the final match will be crowned the U S Amateur champion.  6 matches must be won to take the title.

Coach Poe comments, "This is a wonderful opportunity for Jon and is big for Mule Golf. Jon is the type player that can do well in this type of format. He is very consistent; he definitely will force opponents to be on top of their game in order to beat him. He is mentally tough and could make match play with no problems.  This experience will help Jon in becoming a force in the MIAA and NCAA."

Adam Frank, a junior from Urbandale, Iowa, on June 16 & 17 qualified for the National United States Public Links Championship.  Adam qualified by winning the qualifying tournament that was held at Jester Park Golf Course in Des Moines, Iowa, by shooting a 4 under par 140 (70/70).

The U S Public Links Tournament was held on July 11-16 at Shaker Run Golf Course in Lebanon, Ohio.

Frank fired a 1st round 74, which had him in position to make the match play portion of the event, but ran into trouble on the second day to shoot 80, for a 154 total, which put him out of the final 64 who made the match play. Only 156 players from around the U S qualified for this tournament.

Coach Poe said, "Adam has worked hard this summer on his game. This will help him immensely on the mental side of his game, knowing that he can play at the national level. Adam has unbelievable talent and I think he will lead us to great things this year."
