Jennies blow by Missouri Southern, 67-48
The Central Missouri Jennies avenged an earlier loss against Missouri Southern with a 67-48 triumph on Wednesday evening at the Multi.
The game was tight early on before the Jennies (14-9, 7-7 MIAA) took control with a 10-1 run, behind six points from Megan Schoenfeld, to grab a 24-13 lead halfway through the opening period. The Lions (12-11, 5-10 MIAA) clawed back scoring the final four points of the half to cut the lead to 32-25 at the break. The Jens shot 43 percent (9-of-21) from the field in the opening frame and made more free throws (11) than MSSU attempted (10) in the stanza. Lindsey Maple led the way offensively for UCM with eight points (six from the foul line). Stephenie Cook and Schoenfeld had six apiece. Tyneshia Pierce had eight points to lead Missouri Southern.
The Lions scored the opening bucket of the second period to pull within five, but it was the closest they got the rest of the night. The Jennies put the game away with a 14-4 run sparked by Maple, Ashley Millham, and Jojuana Jones scoring all of the points in the run. Central Missouri did the job on the defensive end as well holding the Lions scoreless for nearly seven minutes at one stretch in the frame. The Jens grabbed their largest lead of the game at 65-42 on a Millham lay-up with 3:00 remaining, before settling for the final margin. UCM shot the ball even better in the second half going 12-of-23 (52 percent) from the field and 9-for-10 from the foul line.
Maple and Millham were the only Central Missouri players in double figures with 15 and 12 respectively. Ela Zawadka had 15 to lead the Lions. Pierce and India Wood had 10 each.
