Jennies use 25-0 run to defeat Northwest Missouri, 80-69
The Central Missouri Jennies used a 25-0 run, spanning more than nine minutes, to defeat the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats 80-69 on Saturday afternoon at the Multipurpose Building.
The first half was a shootout between Meagan Fromm and Kelli Nelson with each player answering the other’s best shot. The opening four minutes were back and forth with neither side holding more than a three-point lead. Northwest Missouri (11-6, 4-4 MIAA) used a 15-8 run to take its largest lead of the game at 25-19, behind eight points from Nelson, with 6:55 remaining. From that point on it was all Jennies (11-5, 4-3 MIAA) as they closed the half by scoring 18 unanswered points to head into the locker room with a 37-25 lead. Kim Battle, Lindsey Maple, and Megan Schoenfeld keyed the run by scoring all of the points.
Central Missouri had a big advantage on the glass as they pulled down 28 rebounds compared to only 17 for the Bearcats in the period. Fromm led all scorers with 12 points in the half. Battle added eight more and had seven rebounds. Nelson had 10 points to lead Northwest Missouri.
The Jens opened the second half and extended their run by scoring the first seven points before Northwest ended the run by scoring five straight. The Jennies held their lead at 15 points until the three minute mark. NWMSU had one more run in it however, getting as close as seven points with 1:12 to play. Central Missouri closed the game out by making 8-of-10 from the foul line.
Both teams finished the game shooting over 40 percent from the floor.. The Jens continued their trend from Thursday night of making more free throws than their opponent attempted. Central Missouri made 31 free throws, while NWMSU went to the charity stripe only 13 times.
Maple led five Jennies in double figures with 21 points and was 14-of-14 from the foul line. Battle nearly recorded a triple-double with 16 points, 15 rebounds (a career-high), and eight assists. Fromm had 16 points, Schoenfeld contributed 14, and Ashley Millham added 12 more.
Nelson led three Northwest players in double digits with 21 points. Meghan Brue had 20 and Lauren Williams dropped in 11.
