Mules basketball adds Haggerty to coaching staff

             Central Missouri State head basketball coach Kim Anderson announced today that Nelson Haggerty has joined the Mules coaching staff for the 2006-07 season.
            “We are excited to have Nelson join us,” said Anderson. “He is a proven recruiter at this level as well as having a broad background in coaching and strength development.”
Haggerty served the past three seasons as an assistant at Pittsburg State under head coach Gene Iba. While at PSU, he helped the Gorillas to an NCAA Tournament regional semifinal appearance in 2004-05.
            Prior to that, Haggerty was the assistant coach at North Shore High School from 2000-02 in his native city of Houston, Texas. He helped the team to as high as a No. 2 ranking in the state while taking the junior varsity squad to a 28-3 overall mark, winning the last 22 games of the season.
            From 1998-99, he was an assistant at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. He helped Hutch climb to a No. 4 national ranking during his tenure.
            During his coaching career, Haggerty has recruited high school all-state performers as well as junior college All-Americans and all-region performers.
            In addition to his success in recruiting and skill development, he is also an expert in the field of strength and conditioning. He has implemented pre-season, in-season, and post-season workout routines at every program he has been with. In addition, he has served as a personal trainer/fitness professional for 24 Hour Fitness and Infinite Fitness in Houston.
            A two-time All-Southwest Conference guard for Baylor University from 1991-95, he averaged an NCAA Division I best 10.1 assists per game as a senior. The assist total is still the third-highest in NCAA history. He also still holds five school records for the Bears.  He earned his degree in Speech Communications from Baylor and is currently working toward his masters in Health and Physical Education.
