| Jennies Have Two Named Academic All-District; Six Players are Selected to All-MIAA Squad Warrensburg,
Mo. (May 10, 2001) -- The softball Jennies of Central Missouri State University
have had two players named to the Verizon College Division Academic All-District VII Team
announced on Thursday, while six have been chosen to the Mid-America Intercollegiate
Athletics Association All-Conference Team released on Monday.
Second baseman Sissy Fletcher (So., DeSoto, Kan.,
DHS) and pitcher Gwen Giffin (Sr., Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Dr. J.H.
Gillis Regional H.S.) were both first-team academic all-district selections, making them
eligible for Verizon College Division Academic All-America honors to be announced in June.
Giffin was also a second-team pick each of the past two years.
Both Fletcher and Giffin were also named honorable mention all-MIAA, as was shortstop Kassie
Long (Fr., Carrollton, Mo., CHS). They were joined on the all-conference
squad by outfielder Desiree' Price (Fr., Olathe, Kan., South H.S.) and
designated player Noelle Casas (Jr., Lee's Summit, Mo., LSHS), who were
chosen to the first team, and third baseman/pitcher Lory Mothersbaugh
(Jr., Unionville, Mo., Putnam County H.S./North Central Missouri College), who was
selected to the second team as a utility player.
Giffin began the spring semester with a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average and is a
chemistry major. She posted a 19-9 record this season, making her only the fifth 19-game
winner in school history. In 33 appearances, she had 24 complete games and compiled a 1.52
earned-run average, with 98 strikeouts in 202 innings pitched.
Fletcher entered the spring semester with a perfect 4.0 GPA and is a middle-school
education major. She led the Jennies in runs scored this season with 33 and was fifth in
hitting with a .299 batting average. She also had seven doubles, two triples and 19 runs
batted in, with six walks and eight stolen bases.
Price led the Jennies with a .359 batting average and in hits (65), doubles (19) and
RBI (32), while Casas was fourth on the team in hitting with a .304 batting average, with
four doubles, 17 RBI and 15 runs scored. Long was third on the squad in hitting with a
.316 batting average, with eight doubles, three triples, a team-leading four home runs,
and 29 RBI.
Mothersbaugh, along with Fletcher, Long and Price, started all 58 games for the Jennies
and was 11-7, with a 1.61 ERA, three saves and 48 strikeouts in 23 appearances (126 1/3
innings) as a pitcher. She hit .277, with six doubles, two triples, 11 RBI, 32 runs scored
and a team-leading 15 stolen bases.
The Jennies posted a 36-22 record this season, marking the sixth time in the last eight
years that they won at least 30 games. They were third in the MIAA's regular-season
standings with an 11-7 conference mark, then went 2-2 at the league's annual post-season
tournament to finish in a tie for fifth place. |
