| Rhesa Sumrell Achieves Second Coaching Milestone
This Season Warrensburg, Mo. (Mar. 20, 2000) -- Central
Missouri State University softball coach Rhesa Sumrell achieved a second major coaching
milestone this past weekend. A 12-0 win over Kansas Wesleyan University Friday (Mar. 17)
in the Jennies' second game of the Emporia State University Trusler Tournament gave
Sumrell her 400th career coaching win at Central. The Jennies went on to win two more
games in the tournament to improve Sumrell's current record at CMSU to 402-201 in her 13th
season and are 13-4 this season.
Earlier this season, on Mar. 3, the Jennies presented Sumrell with her 600th career
softball coaching win overall with a 3-0 victory over Delta State University at the Shutt
Sports Division II Leadoff Classic in Irving, Texas. Sumrell had 194 wins in 11 seasons as
head softball coach at Missouri Western State College (1975-86) and 14 wins in one season
at the University of Missouri (1987) before coming to Central Missouri in 1988. Her
Central teams have won four Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association
championships and have made six NCAA tournament appearances, including fourth-place
finishes in 1989 and 1994. Her 1982 Missouri Western softball team won the NAIA national
championship.
In addition to her current total of 610 wins as a head softball coach, Sumrell also has
494 career wins as a head volleyball coach (in 12 seasons at Missouri Western) and 51 wins
as a head basketball coach (in three seasons at Missouri Western) to give her a total of
1,155 career coaching wins in the three sports.
A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Sumrell is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State
University, where she received both her bachelor's degree (1971) and her master's degree
(1972). |
