Jennies Have Two Players Chosen Academic All-District; Eight Named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll

Warrensburg, Mo. (May 19, 2000) -- The softball Jennies of Central Missouri State University have had two played chosen to the GTE College Division Academic All-District VII Team, while eight have been named to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.

Outfielder Stacy Doiron (Sr., Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Dr. J.H. Gillis Regional H.S.) chosen to the first team of the academic all-district squad, while pitcher Gwen Giffin (Jr., Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Dr. J.H. Gillis Regional H.S.) was a second-team selection. Doiron was a second-team pick each of the past two years, while Giffin was also a second-team choice as a sophomore.

Doiron, who is now eligible for GTE College Division Academic All-America honors, began the spring semester with a 3.87 cumulative grade-point average and is a mass communications major. She hit a team-leading .361 for the Jennies this season with team-high totals of 60 hits, 10 doubles, six triples, 26 runs batted in and 30 runs scored and was a first-team all-MIAA pick.

Giffin, who was the only veteran on CMSU's pitching staff this year, entered the spring semester with a 3.96 GPA and is a chemistry major. She posted a 16-17 record with a 2.37 earned-run average and 69 strikeouts. Ten of her losses came in games decided by two or less runs.

In addition to Doiron and Giffin, those named to the MIAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll were: catcher Emily Barr (Jr., Overland Park, Kan., St. Thomas Aquinas H.S.), pitcher Kristi Butcher [Jr., Boring, Ore., Sam Barlow H.S. (Gresham, Ore.)], outfielder Noelle Casas (So., Lee's Summit, Mo., LSHS), infielder Lauren Loucks (Sr., Mound City, Mo., Holt County H.S.), shortstop Casey McAllister (Sr., Paola, Kan., PHS), and infielder Jessie Simpson [So., Holt, Mo., Kearney (Mo.) H.S.]. Doiron and Loucks both earned the honor for the third straight year, while Giffin and McAllister received it for the second time.

In order to be named to the MIAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll, an athlete must: 1) have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher at her institution, 2) have at least two semesters of attendance at her school, excluding summer sessions, and 3) be a sophomore, junior or senior in athletic eligibility. A total of 66 athletes from the MIAA's 10 schools were chosen to the honor roll for softball.

In order to be chosen to the GTE College Division Academic All-District Team, an athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher and be a starter or key reserve in at least their sophomore year of eligibility. The team is chosen by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members within the district, which includes the states of Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The College Division includes all schools below the major-college level (NCAA Divisions II and III and the NAIA).
