Jennies' Doiron Chosen Academic All-American; Two Players Named MIAA Presidential Scholars

Warrensburg, Mo. (June 14, 2000) -- The post-season academic honors continue to roll in for the softball Jennies of Central Missouri State University.

Outfielder Stacy Doiron has not only been selected to the second team of the GTE College Division Academic All-America Team, but also to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association All-Academic Team, while second baseman Sissy Fletcher and infielder-outfielder Lauren Sigwing have been named MIAA Presidential Scholars.

Doiron, a senior from Antigonish, Nova Scotia (Dr. J.H. Gillis Regional H.S.), entered the spring semester with a 3.87 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and is a mass communications major at CMSU. She was also a first-team all-MIAA pick this season after hitting a team-leading .361 for the Jennies, with team-high totals of 60 hits, 10 doubles, six triples, 26 runs batted in and 30 runs scored.

Fletcher, a freshman from DeSoto, Kan. (DHS), is an education major at Central. She hit .290 this season, with two doubles, two triples, nine RBI and 27 runs scored.

Sigwing, a freshman from Grapevine, Texas (GHS), is a psychology major at CMSU. She hit .277 on the campaign, with three doubles, one home run, nine RBI and 11 runs scored.

Doiron, who becomes CMSU's 44th academic All-America selection since 1980, was joined on the GTE Academic All-America Team by two other players from the MIAA as outfielder Kendra Smith of Northwest Missouri State University was chosen to the first team and designated player Heather Mackie of Truman State University was named to the second team.

The GTE Academic All-America Team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for nomination, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in eligibility, have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and be a starter or valuable reserve. The college division includes NCAA Division II and III and NAIA institutions in the United States and Canada.

In order to be chosen to the Academic All-MIAA Team, an athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA in two semesters of attendance at the nominating institution and have earned all-MIAA honors in their sport during the past season. In order to be named an MIAA Presidential Scholar, an athlete must have a 4.00 cumulative GPA and have completed a minimum of two semesters of attendance at the nominating school.
