JENNIES CLAIM MIAA OUTDOOR TITLE / MULES THIRD

The CMSU Jennies track & field team became the first to win the “triple crown” since Truman State in 2000 after blowing past the competition in the outdoor championships this weekend and winning the indoor and cross-country titles earlier this year. The Jens scored 199 points in the competition (46 more than 2nd place MSSU) including an incredible 38 points from high-point individual Kristin Anderson.

The Jennies had 24 top three finishes at the meet including a 1-2-3 sweep of the 10,000 meter run and high jump. CMSU started the championships in the lead as they took 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th in the heptathalon at Missouri-Rolla during the week. Lori Pitz was the champion (4648) while Jessi Kirkman took second (4226). Anderson kept the Jennies atop the leaderboard with wins in the 3,000 meter run (9:57.78), 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:17.27), and the 10,000 meter run (37:52.28) while also getting 2nd in the 5,000 (18:02.44). Danielle Moul and Kirsten Hasemeier finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively in the 10,000 while Robin Miller (5-07.75), Jennifer Drum (5-07.00) and Haley Morrissey (5-07.00) went one, two, three in the high jump.

Other second spot finishers included Melissa Bolinger in the 100 meter hurdles (14.40), Pitz in the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.35), Shantel Newbold in the 400 meter dash (56.56), and the 4x400 meter relay team (47.28).

The men’s title was decided with the slimmest of margins as there were four schools within a span of six points. Pittsburg State (124) won the championship to break up the Mules hopes of a “triple crown” with Emporia State (123) in 2nd, the Mules (121) in 3rd, and Missouri Southern (119) in 4th.

CMSU was led by Bruce Williams, who took 2nd in the 100 meter dash (10.58), 3rd in the 200 meter dash (21.33), and was a member of both the winning 4x100 (41.16) and 4x400 meter (3:14.77) relay teams. Jarod Wall took 2nd in the 5,000 (14:56.33) and 3rd in the 10,000 meter run (32:23.75) while Steven Edwards threw for three top-four finishes in the discus (3rd, 163-05), shot put (4th, 52-02.50), and hammer (4th, 172-08). Matt Prescott also scored in double figures for the Mules as he took 3rd in both the 110 meter (14.99) and 400 meter hurdles (54.53). Not to be outdone, Adam Akers took 2nd in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:37.41), Joe Mundt grabbed 3rd in the 1,500 meter run (3:58.93) and Ryan Irvin took 3rd in the 400 (48.02).
