Mules take first, Jennies second at MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

(MARYVILLE, Mo.) – The Central Missouri State University Mules won their fourth consecutive Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Outdoor Track & Field Championship, Saturday and Sunday in Maryville, Mo. The Jennies, behind a 30-point effort from junior Kristin Anderson, were second.

Central Missouri’s Mules tallied 170 points to place ahead of Missouri Southern (141) in second and Pittsburg State (93) in third. It was some sweet revenge for CMSU, as Missouri Southern had ended the Mules’ eight-year reign by winning the MIAA Indoor Championship in February.

On the women’s side, Pittsburg State won by 12 points, with 149.5 points to the Jennies 137.5. Truman was third with 109. Anderson was the high-point individual for the women. She won the 3,000-meter run in 10 minutes, 12.04 seconds; the 5,000-meter run in 18:42.58; and the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a new MIAA-record time of 10:53.70. The old mark was 11:15.95, set by Jeannette Mott of Pittsburg State in 2002. Anderson provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in both the 3,000 and the steeplechase.

Other event winners for the Jennies were Lori Pitz in the heptathlon with 4,670 points (a new school record), Jennifer Drum in the high jump at 5-07, and Denise Sandbothe with a new MIAA record of 11-07 in the pole vault. Pitz broke the CMSU record of 4661 points that she set earlier this season, while Sandbothe broke the mark of 11-6.25 set in 2003 by Jenny Simmons of Northwest.

Ivan Varbanov got a pair of wins for the Mules. He took the title in the high jump (7-01) and the triple jump (50-02.5). Stephen Chambers was first in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.29, Jacob Palmer won the 400-meter hurdles in 53.35, and both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams were first. The 4x100 team of Jason Shaw, Petko Yankov, Kevin O’Sadnick, and Kirk Tyner won in a new MIAA and Rickenbrode Stadium record time of 40.80 (the old MIAA mark was 40.86 set in 1997 by Lincoln, and the old stadium record was 40.85 set by Pittsburg State in 1999). The 4x400 team of O’Sadnick, Presley Cherubin, Tyner, and Yankov also set a stadium mark in winning in 3:11.88, beating the old time of 3:12.99 set by Northwest Missouri State in 1984.

The Mules and Jennies compete this Thursday, May 13 at the Missouri Southern Qualifier and Saturday, May 15 at the Emporia State Twilight Meet.
