Edwards grabs National Championship in discus;

CMSU has seven All-American performances

 

Senior Steven Edwards highlighted the Central Missouri State Mules track teams' 11th place finish with a National Championship in the discus at the Division II Championships in Emporia, Kansas this weekend. The Mules had four All-American performances while the Jennies, who took 14th overall, had three earn All-American status.

Edwards (Mound City, Mo.) had a throw of 181-10 to take the title on his third throw of the competition. He also garnered a fifth place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 191-09 to become a two-time All-American. Sophomore Dan Raithel (Jefferson City, Mo.) was third in the hammer with a hurl of 197-05. The final All-American performance for the Mules came from the 4x400 relay team of Dannon Abney, Ryan Irvin, Kyle Brown, and Bruce Williams. They took sixth with a time of 3:14.24. Senior Jarod Wall just missed making All-American by taking ninth in the 10,000 meter run and 11th in the 5,000.

The Jennies were led by Lori Pitz (Windsor, Colo.), who finished third at the championships in the heptathlon (5,230) and narrowly missed the top eight in the high jump along with teammates Jodi Donovan and Haley Morrissey at 5-5.25. Jennifer Drum Greer (Lamonte, Mo.) finished fourth in the high jump (5-7.00). The final top-eight performance came from senior Becky Haug (Lee's Summit, Mo.), who took third in the discus (155-04)
