CMSU Sends 13 Athletes to NCAA Indoor Championships

Warrensburg, Mo. (Mar. 2, 2001) -- Central Missouri State University will send 10 men and three women to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday (Mar. 9-10) at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, Mass.

Leading the Mules' qualifiers are seniors Duane Brisbon [Cross, S.C./East Central C.C. (Miss.)] in the triple jump and Edwin Harris (Knob Noster, Mo./K.N.H.S.) in the 400 meter dash. Harris was second in the 400 and Brisbon was fourth in the triple jump at last year's Division II Championships.

Also qualifying for the Mules are sophomore David Baxter (Osceola, Mo./O.H.S.) in the 55 meter hurdles, sophomore Aaron Crossley (Gladstone, Mo./Kansas City Kansas C.C.) in the pole vault, senior Brayce Forsha (Richmond, Mo./R.H.S.) in the mile run, junior Andy Gilmore (Ashland, Mo./Southern Boone County H.S.) in the high jump, senior Jeremy Knox (Moberly, Mo./M.H.S.) in the 55 meter dash, senior Greg Schmidt (Dallas, Texas/Plano H.S.) in the long jump and 55 meter dash, senior Lamont Truitt [Austin, Texas/Blinn College (Texas)] as a member of the 1,600 meter relay team, and freshman Ivan Varbanov (Sofia, Bulgaria/Regis, Wis., H.S.) in the high jump and triple jump. Truitt will team with Harris, Knox and Baxter on the 1,600 meter relay team.

The Jennies' qualifiers are juniors Rachel Harvey (Branson, Mo./B.H.S.) in the 800 meter run, sophomore Kelli Newkirk (Warsaw, Mo./W.H.S.) in the high jump, and junio4 Cristie Stevenson (Sedalia, Mo./Smith-Cotton H.S.) in the pole vault. Harvey was fourth in the 800 at last year's Division II Championships.

All of the Mules' qualifiers except Brisbon and Varbanov in the triple jump and the 1,600 meter relay team will compete Friday. If they qualify in the events with qualifying heats, they will advance to the finals Saturday. The finals in the men's long jump, high jump and pole vault will take place Friday. The finals for the men's triple jump and 1,600 meter relay will be Saturday. Harvey will compete in a qualifying heat in the 800 Friday. The finals in the 800, women's pole vault and women's high jump will be Saturday.

The Mules tied for ninth with 12 points at last year's NCAA meet. It was their fifth straight top-10 finish at the indoor championships. The Jennies scored six points and tied for 18th in last year's meet.
