| Jennies Make Home Volleyball Debut This Weekend Warrensburg,
Mo. (Sept. 7, 1999) - After two weekends of competition on the road, Central
Missouri State University's volleyball team makes its first appearance on its home court
at the CMSU Multipurpose Building this weekend (Sept. 10-11). The Jennies, ranked 13th
in this week's AVCA Division II Coaches' Top 25 poll, will be joined in the Central
Missouri State Invitational by MIAA-foe Emporia State University, the University of
Alabama-Huntsville and Quincy University.
Coach Peggy Martin's Jennies will play Alabama-Huntsville (5-0) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
and Quincy (1-3) on Saturday at 11 a.m. CMSU and Emporia State will not meet this weekend,
since they play twice in MIAA competition later in the season. In the weekend's other
matches, Quincy and Alabama-Huntsville meet at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, while Emporia State
plays Alabama-Huntsville at 11 a.m. and Quincy at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Jennies have won the only previous meeting with Alabama-Huntsville and all four
previous meetings with Quincy. Their most recent meeting with both schools came in 1995.
After splitting four matches at last weekend's Division II Premier Challenge in Denver,
Colo., the Jennies will take a 5-3 record into the weekend competition. Martin's career
victory total stands at 793, as she moves closer to becoming the first coach in Division
II volleyball history to record 800 career coaching wins.
Senior middle hitter Daria McConnell put on a record-setting performance for the
Jennies at the Premier Challenge. She had 112 kills in the Jennies' four matches,
including a school-record 31 in a five-game win over Northwood University (Mich.). The day
before she had tied the mark (shared by All-Americans Pat Hempen, Becky Belland and Sarah
Dallas) with 30 kills in a five-game loss to the University of Northern Colorado. For her
performance, McConnell was named MIAA Hitter of the Week. Sophomore setter Robyn Griffin,
who averaged just over 13 assists per game in the Jennies' four outings, won MIAA
setter-of-the-week honors. |
