| Volleyball Jennies Hope to Continue Streaks,
Then Play at Home Warrensburg, Mo. (Oct. 19, 1999) - Life on
the road certainly has agreed with Central Missouri State University's volleyball team the
past three weeks and coach Peggy Martin hopes the trend can continue at Kirksville, Mo.,
Wednesday night. The Jennies play at Truman State University in the final match in a
string of 11 straight on the road that began Sept. 24.
Going into the Truman match, the Jennies have won all 10 road matches so far to improve
their overall record to 21-3 and 10-0 in the MIAA. They are ranked 11th in this week's
AVCA Division II Coaches' Top 25 poll.
The Jennies will put three streaks on the line Wednesday. They have a current winning
streak of 18 straight matches. They have not lost since suffering a five-game setback to
Regis University (Colo.) on Sept. 3 in the Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver. They have
won 43 straight MIAA matches. Their last league loss was at home in five games to Washburn
University on Nov. 15, 1996. They have won 28 straight conference road matches. Their last
loss to an MIAA foe on its home court was a 3-1 decision at the University of Missouri-St.
Louis on Oct. 26, 1995.
The Jennies currently have a two-match lead in the MIAA over the second-place Bulldogs,
who are 14-6, 8-2 in the league. In the first match between the two teams this season, the
Jennies won 8-15, 15-11, 16-14, 15-11 on Sept. 18 in Warrensburg.
Following Wednesday's match, the Jennies will play on their home court for the first
time since Sept. 22, when they meet Northwest Missouri State University Friday in a 7 p.m.
match at the CMSU Multipurpose Building. On Saturday at 11 a.m., the Jennies entertain
Missouri Western State College, while next Wednesday (Oct. 27) Pittsburg State University
comes to Warrensburg for a 7 p.m. match.
In addition to being highly successful, the long string of road matches has produced
some notable accomplishments for the Jennies. On Sept. 24 at Northwest Missouri, the
Jennies gave Martin her 800th career coaching win, making her the first coach in NCAA
Division II women's volleyball history to record 800 wins. The Oct. 2 five-game match at
the University of Alaska-Anchorage (which CMSU won 13-15, 16-14, 14-16, 15-9, 15-12) saw
the Jennies' Daria McConnell set school records for kills in a match (41) and digs in a
match (41) and setter Robyn Griffin claim the school mark for assists in a match (82).
McConnell's performance in that encounter earned her the AVCA Division II national player
of the week award for the second time this season. |
