Mules grapplers thump Missouri Baptist 27-12

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) - Central Missouri State University got pins from senior 184-pounder Kevin Grece and junior 141-pounder Wade Killgore to pick up a 27-12 win over Missouri Baptist University hear tonight. But despite those two efforts, it was the wrestling of a pair of freshmen the drew raves from Mules head coach Robin Ersland.

Vince Bertucci and Daniel Moore did a great job for us tonight,” Ersland said. “Bertucci was a one-time state qualifier, and Anthony Haddad was a three-time state placewinner. Moore was a one time-state placewinner, and I think Nigel Kinworthy was a two-time state champion. He’s a big-time wrestler. For us to beat those two guys, that is big for us.”

The wins to which Ersland referred came at 197 and 149 pounds. Moore picked up a convincing 8-1 win, scoring seven points in the final period, to topple his more decorated 197-pound opponent.

And at 149, Bertucci overcame an 8-4 deficit in the third period, scoring eight points in a flurry to close the match. Tack on a riding time point, and he defeated Haddad 15-9 to give CMSU a 24-9 lead, effectively clinching the match for the Mules. With just two matches remaining, at 157 and 165 pounds, the best the Spartans could do was finish three points behind (24-21 if they could record a pair of falls).

“Vince really battled back,” Ersland said. “He had a great match, and to come from behind like he did was huge.”

Missouri Baptist took a 3-0 lead after winning a decision at 174 pounds. The Mules, though, got Grece’s pin and Moore’s decision to go up 9-3. Ryan Bowen won by forfeit at heavyweight to make it 15-3 before Missouri Baptist recorded wins at 125 and 133.

Killgore’s win by fall at 141 made it 15-9, and then Bertucci’s comeback sealed the deal. Jesse Zeugin got the Mules’ final three points with a decision at 157, before Missouri Baptist won a decision at 165 pounds in the final match of the night.

The Mules return to action December 5 when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa for the University of Northern Iowa Open.
