Blaine Rutledge connects for a solo homerun in the top of the seventh inning of Sunday's MIAA championship game that proved to be the difference in the one-run victory.
In action Sunday morning at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan., the Mules completed their suspended semi-final game against Emporia State from Saturday night, failing to score in the final two innings in dropping an 11-4 decision. That loss sent UCM into an elimination game against Fort Hays State, and the Mules rallied for four runs in the final three innings to pick up a 4-2 victory and earn a rematch with ESU in the one-game championship Sunday afternoon. Danny Potje gave the Mules six and a third innings of solid pitching before turning the game over to Chris Matlock, who worked out of a jam in the seventh and finished by retiring all eight hitters he faced to pick up the win.
The title game saw Mules pitching hold the powerful Hornet offense to only seven hits on the way to a 4-3 victory and the championship trophy. Matlock came out of the bullpen once again to pitch two and third innings of scoreless relief to earn his ninth save, with starting pitcher Matt Curtis earning the win as the Mules improved to 41-15.
