The Mules flag remained Thursday as semi-final round play got underway at the NCAA-II Championships in Sauget, Illinois. The Mules would see their season come to an end however with a 5-3 setback to top-ranked Mount Olive in the first round of semi-final action on Thursday afternoon. The Mules, who would have had to win Thursday to force a true semi-final game Friday, end their 2008 season with a 47-17 record and a fourth place finish in the championships.
Will Feil had three of the eight hits in the game to lead the Mules attack, while Mike Hallam hit a solo homerun for one of the three runs. UCM struggled to get the big hit in the contest and stranded eight runners, while it was two unearned runs in the seventh inning by Mount Olive that proved to be the difference in the game. Brian McBryde had one hit and finished his career tied for sixth on the all-time NCAA-II hit list with 312.

Matlock tossed nine and a third innings of shutout relief, and recorded 13 strikeouts, but the Mules found themselves on the short end of a 6-5, 19-inning marathon game to Sonoma State, in a contest that ended just before 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
