Mules finish MIAA series sweep over Washburn

Balin Bergman had a homerun in each game Friday, and three in the four-game series
The No. 20 Central Missouri Mules took out the bats to finish a four game sweep of the Washburn Ichabods on Friday night with 9-1 and 10-3 wins.
The Mules (17-5, 7-1 MIAA) got another solid performance on the mound from junior Mark Carey, who threw six innings and allowed only one run while striking out seven to move to 4-0 on the season.
The offense gave him a nine-run cushion as well, tallying runs in the second through fifth frames. Junior Mike Hallam led the attack with a 3-of-3 performance while senior Iain Dykins kicked off a big night with a 2-of-3 showing. The Mules chased the WU starter after 3.2 innings and scored runs on the next two pitchers in relief to post the 9-1 win. UCM had 14 hits to WU’s five in the game.
The nightcap saw the Ichabods get their first lead of the series on a Wes Joy homer to lead off the game but it didn’t last long as UCM scored two in the bottom of the first. Sophomore starter Danny Potje threw six innings and allowed only three hits and a couple runs while striking out 10 batters. He left the outing with an 8-2 lead before Aaron Brett and Kyle Crandall finished the final three frames.
The Mules broke it open in the fifth after closing the top of the inning on a spectacular double play by shortstop Brian McBryde and second baseman Jayson Brugman. McBryde flipped the ball to Brugman out of his glove, who stepped on second and quickly turned it to first base. McBryde then led off the bottom half of the frame with a solo shot to left field. Dykins followed that a couple batters later with a two-run bomb to left center. The Mules would tack on four in the inning on five hits.
Dykins finished the game with a 3-of-5 clip while Balin Bergman also went 3-of-5 with a homer in the eighth. It was the second homer of the day and third of the series for Bergman. He also scored three runs in the nightcap.
