Mules sweep past Truman State in MIAA opening games

Danny Potje tossed five hitless innings to pick up his fourth win of the season

The Central Missouri Mules opened MIAA play with the 61st and 62nd consecutive wins over the Truman State Bulldogs on Sunday at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field by taking 5-0 and 10-4 victories. The Mules continued a winning streak that has been going since 1988 with the sweep.

Junior Mark Carey got the win in the first game, throwing the first five frames and allowing only two hits while striking out five.

The offense jumped on the Bulldogs early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The first one came on an RBI double to left center from junior Mike Hallam. Junior Jayson Brugman doubled home another run while Hallam scored on a pickoff attempt that sailed past the first baseman.

Brugman led off the 4th with another double before Luis Perez cleared the bases with a homer over the left field fence. Tom Latimore threw the final two frames without allowing a hit to finish off the Bulldogs.

The nightcap saw another dominating performance on the mound by the Mules as sophomore Danny Potje threw a hitless five innings, striking out seven. He only allowed one baserunner on a walk and left the game with an 8-0 lead.

The Mules scored two runs on back-to-back triples by junior Will Feil and senior Iain Dykins in the third before plating four runs in the fifth inning, thanks to a couple sacrifice flies and an RBI double from senior Balin Bergman. Central Missouri cruised from there as head coach Tom Myers played 19 guys, including five pitchers.
