Mules win two of three in season opening series

Chance Tuttle homered in all three games
The No. 3 University of Central Missouri Mules baseball squad opened the season winning 2-of-3 against the Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech this weekend in Russellville. UCM posted 13-2 and 16-5 wins on the first two days before dropping the series finale 8-4.
The Mules (2-1) had 16 different field players play in at least two games while 14 pitchers also got time on the mound in the series.
Central Missouri came out in the season opener and didn’t waste any time on offense, tallying eight runs in the first three innings. Junior lefthander Danny Potje got the start, and tossed a pre-determined four innings, giving up only two hits and striking out six to get the win. Mitch Stubenhofer came in and tossed two frames of shutout baseball, striking out five.
Junior center fielder Chance Tuttle led a 13-hit Mule attack, going 3-of-4 with a homer and two RBI. Freshman John Calhoun also got in on the action, hitting a home run in his first collegiate at-bat.
The Mules had 13 more hits on the second day in a 16-5 run-rule. Junior left fielder Steffon Williams was 2-of-3 with a homer while sophomore catcher Eric Cole got the start and went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a round-tripper. UCM scored the game’s first 11 runs.
Junior righthander Brooks Martin got the start, going a pre-determined three innings and giving up two hits with five K’s to get his first win as a Mule.
The Mules jumped out early again on the final day of action, scoring the first four runs. Tuttle made it three home runs in three days with a three-run shot in the second frame while Williams hit his second of the weekend on a solo shot in the third frame.
The Mules got a solid pre-determined start from Warrensburg native and freshman Ryan Dawson, who threw a pair of hitless innings. The Wonder Boys got to the Mules relief staff in the fourth though, plating seven runs. The UCM offense couldn’t get back on the board though, and ATU allowed only one hit in the final three frames to get the win.
