The No. 18 Central Missouri Mules baseball squad swept the competition this weekend in their first home action of the year at the Holiday Inn Express Classic, defeating Upper Iowa 7-1 and 10-1, and Winona State 17-5.

The Mules (5-1) opened the weekend on Friday with a doubleheader against Upper Iowa. In the first contest Central Missouri got a five-inning performance from junior righthander Brooks Martin as he gave up only one hit and struck out nine. On offense, the Mules were led by junior center fielder Chance Tuttle, who went 3-of-4 with a couple RBI. Freshman shortstop Bret Schwartz also picked up a couple hits and RBI as the Mules scored runs in the first two frames. They broke it open in the fifth with three runs, and capped the scoring in the sixth with two more scores. UIU didn’t score until their final inning, hitting a solo homer in the seventh.

The nightcap saw junior lefthander Danny Potje toss five frames of three-hit baseball with six K’s. The offense was pushed by junior designated hitter Stewart Hoover, who had five RBI, including a two-run homer to put UCM up 4-1 in the second inning. The Mules tallied two more runs in the fourth, and added four in the sixth to take the 10-1 win. Chance Tuttle tied a school record with five stolen bases in the game, a feat that had not been accomplished since 1992. Senior righthander Mark Carey also got his first action of the season, tossing one inning and striking out all three he faced.

The Mules face Winona State on Sunday and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. They tallied 14 hits in the game, including a 4-of-5, 2-RBI performance from Schwartz. Tuttle went 2-of-3 with a couple RBI, and freshman third baseman John Oropeza was 2-of-3 with a game-high four RBI. Central Missouri answered three runs by the Warriors in the third with five more in the bottom half of the inning. The Mules capped the scoring with a seven-run sixth. Freshman righthander Ryan Dawson got the win, going four pre-determined innings and striking out six.
