Mules baseball (9-3, 4-2 MIAA) opened their 2009 home MIAA schedule with a four-game weekend series against Missouri Western (8-10, 1-5 MIAA) taking three of four.

The Mules battled back and scored the game winning run on a throwing error in game one of the double-header on Friday to win 6-5, but would not be able to rally as they lost 4-2 in the nightcap. On Saturday, Central Missouri used strong pitching performances and won game three, 6-1, and game four, 7-1.

On Friday Mark Carey got the start in the opener and gave up four runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Ryan Mitchell came in relief and threw 1.2 innings allowing one hit and no runs. Nick Phillips came into face four batters and gave up a run on one hit. Chris Matlock (1-0) came in to get the win as he recorded a strikeout for the final out. Colin Murphy led the offensive attack for the Mules going 3-of-3, with a double, one run scored, and a RBI. Stewart Hoover hit a home run and drove in two runs for Central Missouri.

Missouri Western used a strong pitching performance and limited the Mules to two runs on six hits in game two Friday. Will Feil and Chance Tuttle each had hits and a RBI for UCM. Brooks Martin (3-1) picked up the loss for Central Missouri giving up four runs on four hits in five innings.

On Saturday the Mules got solid pitching performances in both games, with Mitch Stubenhofer picking up the win in game one, scattering five hits over six innings. Murphy and Jon Wegener drove in two runs with Murphy hitting his first homerun of the season.

In the nightcap Saturday, Nick Phillips came out of the bullpen to allow only one hit over three plus innings, as the Mules posted a 7-1 triumph. Phillips came on after starter Ryan Dawson, who had pitched four scoreless innings, ran into control problems in the top of the fifth inning. Will Feil had a pair of hits, including a two-run homerun, and Kelly Quirk also added a homerun for the Mules.
