Mules win three of four at Northwest Missouri State

Chris Matlock won two games and established a new UCM and MIAA record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched

The No. 16 Mules baseball squad took 3-of-4 from the Northwest Missouri Bearcats on Sunday and Monday at Bearcat Field after the series was pushed back two times.

The Mules (12-4, 7-3 MIAA) grabbed game one by a 3-2 margin in 11 innings. Mitch Stubenhofer got the start, going 5.1 innings and giving up only two runs, one of which was earned. The Mules scored runs in the first and fifth innings, but the Bearcats answered with runs in the bottom half of each frame to make it 2-2. UCM scored on an RBI single from junior outfielder Chance Tuttle in the top of the 11th, bringing in freshman John Oropeza.

Central Missouri got relief from All-American closer Chris Matlock though. He tossed 5.1 innings of hitless relief to get the win while striking out seven. In the process, he broke the MIAA record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched at 35.1. He then pitched a more innings the next day in game three to extend that streak to 37.

Game two saw the Bearcats hold off UCM, thanks to a grand slam in the second inning that held up for a 4-3 win. The Mules scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn’t quite get the next runner past, stranding the bases loaded in the final frame.

The third game of the series saw junior Stewart Hoover hit a homer in the top of the seventh to break a 6-6 tie. Matlock tossed the final 1.2 frames to grab the win, allowing only one hit.

The Mules and Bearcats had an offensive battle in the final game of the series, scoring seven runs each in the first five frames. Jon Wegener was the hero, slugging two home runs in the game. The Mules also got homers from Colin Murphy and Will Feil in the outing.

Central Missouri scored two runs in the top of the eighth thanks to an error by NWMSU, and followed that with an insurance run in the ninth with Murphy’s solo shot. Nick Phillips tossed the final 2.1 innings to get the win, giving up no hits and striking out four.
