Mules split opening MIAA twinbill at Pitt State

Brooks Martin improved to 3-0 with the first game win
Mules baseball opened their 2009 MIAA schedule Friday by splitting a pair of games at Pittsburg State. The Mules took the opener 7-1. In the second game, two costly errors led to four unearned runs in a five-run second inning, as the Mules fell 6-5.
Junior Brooks Martin (3-0) got the start and win in the opener, giving up only two hits, one run and striking out three in five innings. Nick Phillips came in and tossed two frames of shutout baseball, giving up no hits.
Junior center fielder Chance Tuttle led a nine-hit Mule (6-2, 1-1 MIAA) attack, going 3-of-4 with a double, home run, two RBI, and scored three times. Freshman shortstop Bret Schwartz went 2-for-2 in the game, drove in a run, and scored twice. Colin Murphy also went 2-for-3 and had a double.
The Mules had eight hits in the second game, but Pittsburg State (4-7, 1-1 MIAA) took advantage of two errors in the second inning and scored five-runs to win 6-5. Junior left hander Danny Potje (2-1) got the start, giving up five runs on three hits, but was replaced by junior right hander Mitch Stubenhofer in the second. Stubenhofer threw 5.2 innings giving up two hits and one run. Senior right hander Chris Matlock came in to get the last two outs for the Mules. Tuttle led the offense again for the Mules going 2-of-4 and scoring twice.
