Coach Myers says: Bret will be back at shortstop for another spring, where he has proven to be one of the MIAA’s best defenders... He returned for his third fall, and still has the drive to get even better... He plays extremely hard and has high expectations of himself and for his teammates... He will be back at the top of the order, where he finds ways to get on base and score runs.
As a Sophomore: The starting shortstop and a second-team ABCA All-Region and All-MIAA pick... Earned a spot on the NCAA South Central Regional All-Tournament team... He ranked third on the team in hits... He had 26 multiple hit games and 13 multiple RBI games, while reaching base safely in all but four contests... Had five RBI in a game against No. 8 Emporia State (Mar 14)... Was 3-of-4 with four runs scored and an inside the park homer vs. Missouri Western (April 1)... Set the school record with 212 assists on the season.
As a Freshman: The MIAA Freshman of the Year, he also earned second-team all-conference and All-South Central Region honors at shortstop... ranked third on the team in average (.363) and second in hits (78)... He had a .941 fielding percentage as well... Went 4-of-5 against Winona State (Feb 22) and Fort Hays State (May 2)... Had nine multiple RBI games and 18 multiple run games... Earned NCAA South Central Region All-Tournament Team as well.
In High School: Was a two-time all-state, all-conference, and all-area performer for head coach Marc Hines... As a senior he hit .444... Committed only two errors in three years as a starter... His team won the 4A state title as a junior... Also played basketball and ran cross country, lettering three years in each, earning all-conference honors twice on the court... Played in the East/West All-Star Game as well.
Personal: Social Studies major with a 3.36 GPA ... born June 26, 1989 ... son of Greg and Patti Schwartz.
