Glenn Milner (34) scores his fourth touchdown against Pittsburg State

Despite 218 yards and four touchdowns by Glenn Milner, the Central Missouri Mules fell in double overtime to the 19th ranked Pittsburg State Gorillas, 38-31 on Saturday at Walton Stadium/Kennedy Field. It was the first double overtime game for the Mules since 1997 against Truman.

The Mules (3-2, 2-1 MIAA) scored a go ahead touchdown in the first overtime and forced the Gorillas (4-1, 2-1 MIAA) into a fourth and goal from the six, but back-up quarterback Chadd Snyder scrambled to the right and dove for the goal line and flipped into the endzone to knot it at 31. The Gorillas started with the ball first in the second OT and scored in three plays forcing UCM to find the goal line on its possession. A Stinson Dean pass was high on fourth down and six from the 21 and the Gorillas stormed the field to celebrate.

The game went into overtime on a last second field goal by Pittsburg State after Milner scored the go-ahead score for the Mules from 31 yards out with 4:08 left. UCM pinned the Gorillas back on their own 13 with 2:11 left in the game and a 24-21 lead but a 35-yard pass on the first play from scrimmage to Brandon Clark quickly put the Gorillas on the attack. They drove it all the way down to the Central Missouri eight yard line before calling a timeout with one second left. Jared Witter drilled the 25 yarder at the horn to force overtime.

The Gorillas opened the scoring with a 15 yard drive and score by quarterback Mark Smith after a fumble on a punt by UCM’s Anthony Parks. The Central Missouri offense woke up after that though and Milner scored twice in the second quarter to put the Mules up 14-7 heading into halftime. The Mules outgained PSU 218-to-131 in the first half while Milner ran for 124 yards.

The second half was a different story though. PSU had 319 yards in the second half and overtime including 190 on the ground. Both teams ran all over the other as the Mules finished the game with 283 yards rushing and 375 total.

The Gorillas tied it at 14 on the first drive of the third quarter but the Mules answered with a 23 yard Marcelo Velazquez field goal on the next possession to take back the lead.

PSU would get its first lead of the game in the fourth quarter when it drove 75 yards and capped it with a Snyder touchdown with 5:08 to play to make it 21-17. A big 52 yard kickoff return by Damond Berry put the Mules in PSU territory to start the next drive though and five plays later, it was 24-21.

The Mules looked as if they were going to ice the game on the next PSU possession when Kendall Ricketts forced a Snyder fumble and Derek Lampkin recovered it at the Gorilla 42. The Mules couldn’t manage to get a first down though, and were forced to punt.

The Mules were led on offense by Milner with a career-high as he was the first Mule to eclipse 200 yards since Will Caldwell set the school record against the Gorillas in 2005 (276 yards). Dean went 9-of-19 for 92 yards and rushed for 46. On defense, Ricketts led the way with 20 tackles to make him only the fifth player in school history to surpass the 300-tackle mark, as he sits in third place at 311. Adrian Singletary logged 16 tackles as well for UCM.
