2000 Mules' Football Fact Sheet - Game 2

The Game: Quincy University at Central Missouri State University, Sept. 9, 7 p.m.; CMSU's Audrey J. Walton Stadium/Vernon Kennedy Field (10,000, natural grass), Warrensburg, Mo.; game sponsor: CMSU Mule Train.

The Mules (1-0-0): The Mules won their Aug. 31 season opener 45-26 at home over Winona State University. The Mules unveiled several new performers on offense and all of them had impressive debuts. Cable Davis, a transfer from NCAA Division I University of Southern Mississippi, completed 11 of 14 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Red-shirt freshman Lee Thompson rushed for 109 yards and scored on touchdown runs of eight and four yards. He is the first CMSU freshman to rush for 100 yards or more in a game since Marcus Carlis in 1994. Junior college transfer Manny Evans, who gained 781 yards and averaged 10.3 yards per carry at Moorpark (Calif.) College last season, rushed for 96 yards and scored on touchdown runs of three and five yards. Another California JuCo product, Marcus Thomas from Sacramento City College, caught six passes for 107 yards. Punter Kenny Zordani, a transfer from Fort Lewis College, averaged 43.0 yards on his two punts in the game. Place-kicker Troy Hocker, a transfer from Western Illinois University who sat out last season, made all six of his extra point attempts and kicked a 43-yard field goal in his first attempt. Defensively, Brandon Stoker led the Mules with 11 tackles, while returning All-American Colston Weatherington had six tackles, including two sacks.

The Hawks (0-1-0): They lost their season opener 37-0 at Southwest Baptist University last Saturday. The Hawks turned the ball over six times on three fumbles and three interceptions. Chris DeWitt and Shane DeSherlia shared the quarterbacking duties for Quincy, but completed just 15 of 44 passes for 157 yards. DeWitt was 10 of 24 for 106 yards and an interception, while DeSherlia was five of 20 for 51 yards with two interceptions. Vinny Santacroce was the Hawks' top receiver with six catches for 88 yards. On the ground, Quincy was limited to just 69 yards rushing and DeSherlia had 50 of those. Linebacker Jim Rashid led the Hawks' defensive effort with seven tackles.

The Coaches: Willie Fritz is in his fourth season at CMSU with a record of 21-13-0. The Mules were 7-4-0 last season after going 8-3-0 in 1998 and 5-6-0 in 1997. Fritz came to CMSU after four years as head coach at Blinn College (Texas), where he compiled a 39-5-1 record. His last two teams at Blinn each went 12-0-0 and won the junior college national championship each year (1995, 1996). Bill Terlisner is in his first season as interim head coach at Quincy. He was named to the position in mid-July when Brian Cox resigned as head coach to go to Southwest Missouri State University as an assistant. Terlisner had been Quincy's offensive coordinator under Cox and is in his fourth year on the Hawks' staff. He played four seasons for Quincy (1987-90) at offensive tackle. Before joining the Hawks' coaching staff, he coached one season as an assistant at William Penn College.

The Series: Tied at 1-1. The Hawks won the first meeting 12-0 back in 1948. The Mules won last year at Quincy 60-13.

Last Year: The Mules scored on nine of their first 10 possessions and rolled up their highest point total in a game since 1996. All 56 players in uniform for CMSU appeared in the game. The Mules used 10 different ball carriers, eight different receivers and four quarterbacks. Defensively, CMSU produced seven turnovers, six sacks and limited Quincy to minus 39 yards rushing. The Mules' 19 penalties (for 175 yards) tied the MIAA record and set a CMSU record for most penalties in a game.

Mules' Injuries: The Mules did not have any serious injuries in the Winona State game.
