Five Mules named to Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-Midwest Region team
(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – Five Central Missouri State University Mules football players earned another feather in their respective caps recently, as they were named to Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-Midwest Region team. Sophomore tailback Kegan Coleman and junior defensive end Roderick Green were first-team All-Region selections, while senior wide receiver Todd Devoe, senior offensive tackle Dan Joiner, and senior strong safety Brian Riley were second-team picks. All five Mules advance to the national ballot to earn All-America recognition.
Coleman, a 5-8, 190 pound Lee’s Summit, Mo. native, led the Mules with 262 carries for 1,484 yards, an average of 5.3 yards per carry. He also led the MIAA in scoring with 24 touchdowns (22 rushing, one receiving, and one on a kickoff return) to establish new Central Missouri State records for rushing and total touchdowns and scoring. He was a unanimous first-team All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association selection, a Daktronics Division II All-Midwest Region team pick, and an honorable mention All-American by D2Football.com.
Green, a 6-2, 235 pound defensive end, is a junior from Brenham, Texas. He had 51 tackles (31 solo), 19 tackles for 84 yards lost, and six sacks totaling 46 yards for the season.
Devoe is a 6-3, 200 pound senior wide receiver, from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He led the Mules in with a school-record tying 58 receptions for 1,045 yards, for an average of 18 yards per catch. His receiving yards total was the second highest in school history, while his 12 touchdown receptions established a new single-season mark.
Joiner is a 6-3, 285, senior lineman, from Garden City, Mo. was a major contributor to the Mules’ offensive success. He helped the team establish new school records of 4,909 yards of total offense, 228 first downs, 27 touchdown passes, 459 points, and 64 TDs.
Riley, a 6-0, 215 pound strong safety, is a senior from Kansas City, Mo. He made 74 tackles (40 solo), had four interceptions for 97 yards, and broke up 10 passes for the Mules’ defense. His 10 pass breakups ties for second most in school history.
All five were first-team All-MIAA selections, while Coleman, Green, Devoe, and Joiner were named to the Daktronics All-Midwest Region team.
The Mules finished the 2002 season with a record of 10-2, 8-1 and second in the MIAA, and a trip to the NCAA Division II Football Playoffs for the first time in school history.
