Odessa native wins Markey Football Scholarship at Central Missouri State
(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) - Odessa, Mo. native and Central Missouri State University senior football player Scott Young was honored for his work in the classroom, in the community, and on the football field recently, as he was awarded the 2003 E.A. and Mary Jane Markey Scholarship. The award was presented by the CMSU Foundation in honor of the late Central alumnus and Warrensburg native Eph Mrkey and his late wife, Mary Jane Irvine Markey, a Central alumna and native of Marshall, Mo.Young, a construction management major at Central, is the Mules’ starting tight end and is a three-year letterwinner at Central. He also has been a key member of the Central football team off the field, as a member of the Central Missouri State Literacy Team, which reads with area grade school students, and as a member of Mule Haul, a program in which Central football players help fellow students move into the residence halls at the start of the school year. Young also has served as a coach at the annual Central Youth Football Clinic. Eph Markey was a stand out footblal player and basketball player for the University, and also competed on the track & field team. Following his graduation from Central, Markey was a successful high school coach and administrator for 50 years, 29 of which were spent at Northeast High School in Kansas City, Mo. Coach Markey is a member of the Missouri High School Coaches Hall of Fame and Central’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mary Jane Irvine Markey was a graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. and Central Missouri State University. She was an elementary school teacher in Missouri for 25
The Markey Scholarship recipient must have a grecord of distinguished academic achievement and have exemplified leadership, skill, dedication, and team contributions to Mules football and Central Missouri State University.
Young was awarded the scholarship at halftime of last Saturday’s game vs. Missouri Southern. He was joined by his parents, Steve and Mary Young, and his sister,Stephanie.
