Grace, Stookey awarded Markey Scholarships

 

The Central Missouri State University Foundation awarded its 2005 E.A. and Mary Jane Markey Football Scholarship to Greg Race and Dan Stookey at halftime of last Saturday’s football game vs. Truman. The award honors the late CMSU alumnus and Warrensburg native Eph Markey and his late wife, Mary Jane Irvine Markey, a Central Missouri alumna and native of Marshall, Mo.

Race is a linebacker for the Mules and is a native of Warrensburg. He is a senior majoring in construction management, and is the son of Gwenette Grady.

Stookey also plays linebacker for the Mules and is from Columbia, Mo. He is a senior majoring in graphic arts, and is the son of Dan and Rita Stookey.

Eph Markey was a standout football and basketball player for the University, and also competed in track. Following his graduation, Markey was a successful high school coach and administrator for 50 years, 29 of which were spent at Northeast High School in Kansas City, Mo. Coach Markey is a member of the Missouri High School Coaches’ Hall of Fame and the CMSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Mary Jane Irvine Markey was a graduate of Stephens College in Columbia and Central Missouri State. She was an elementary school teacher in Missouri for 25 years.

Markey Scholarship recipients must have a record of distinguished academic achievement and have exemplified leadership, skill, dedication, and team contribution to Mules football and the University.

On hand to present the scholarships were CMSU President Dr. Aaron Podolefsky and CMSU Athletic Director Jerry Hughes. Also present were Jane Markey Walker, daughter of Eph and Mary Jane Markey, and her cousins Dan, Patty, and Jordan Smith.
