UCM Athletics names 2008-09 Senior Athletes of the Year

The University of Central Missouri had its annual Athletics Banquet on Monday night, honoring the senior student-athletes and teams for their outstanding accomplishments in 2008-09. The Outstanding Male and Female senior student-athletes were also recognized.

The newly named Peggy Martin Award for the Outstanding Female Senior Student Athlete was given to Megan Leonard of the softball team, and Brittanie Roldan of the track and field squad.
Megan Leonard into last week as the national leader in ERA, with a current mark of 0.63, and has won 15 consecutive games for an overall mark of 18-1… she shattered the old MIAA record of 47 consecutive scoreless innings and matched the NCAA Division II record with 83 and 2/3 innings… during her streak, she shut out Missouri Western, who had won an MIAA record 32 consecutive games, and shut out defending national runner up Emporia State… She also tossed two no-hitters, and both were just one walk away from being perfect games, making her the career record holder for no-hitters with three… her current strikeout total is at 240, and she had 303 last season, the two highest single season totals in school history, to put it in perspective, the old record was 185 in a season… this season she has struck out 10 or more batters 17 times… her strikeouts per seven innings total is at 12.52, which would break the MIAA record, and her career strikeouts per seven is at 10.6, another MIAA record… her ERA is on pace to shatter the school record of 0.80, and her 21 career shutouts are two shy of the school record holder, who tallied that mark in four years… She is also tied for the single season saves record of five last season… So far this year her opponents have hit only .121 against her, and she has allowed only one home run all season… In MIAA play, she has allowed only 6 runs in 72 innings, along with an 11-0 record and seven shutouts… she has been named MIAA Pitcher of the Week six times, and National Pitcher of the Week once in her career… She was a first-team All-MIAA selection last year, and she will contend for national pitcher of the year honors this season… She helped the Jens to the NCAA Tournament last year, and has them poised again for another one this season, helping them to the MIAA Title for the first time since 1997… by the time she is finished this season, she will be considered the best pitcher ever to put on a Jennies uniform… The Purdy, Missouri native is the daughter of David and Vicki Leonard.
Brittanie Roldan is a two-time All-American and the best triple jumper in school history… she ranks number 1 all time with the best indoor and outdoor triple jumps in school history at 40-1.50 indoors and 39-9.25 outdoors... she has been named All-MIAA in three different events indoors and three events outdoors during her career, ranking in the UCM top 10 in each… and has gone for a total of 18 all-conference performances… She has provisionally qualified for nationals eight times, in both the triple jump and long jump, as well as the 60 meter hurdles and the 100 meter hurdles outdoors… She has also been named MIAA Athlete of the Week on two occasions this season… Roldan has won the MIAA indoor triple jump title, the outdoor triple jump title, and the indoor long jump in her career… This year, she finished second in the nation in the triple jump indoors… in addition to her on the field accomplishments, she is also very active off the field… she is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and serves as the MIAA President and Chair… she has also helped on the Literacy Team, Legacy Program, TRIO program, and is the president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority… She is secretary of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and represented UCM at the NCAA Leadership Conference last year… She is a Who’s Who at Central Missouri, and has been on the Deans list for 7 semesters… her undergraduate GPA in Marketing is 3.85, and she is a multiple time winner of the MIAA Commissioners Academic Honor Roll, Academic All-MIAA, Academic All-American, and the NAACP Athlete of the Year in 2007… The Frisco, Texas native is the daughter of Ray Roldan and Rhonda McLemore

The Vernon Kennedy Award for the Outstanding Male Senior Student-Athlete was given to Jaban Moore of the track and field team, and Chris Matlock of the Mules baseball squad.
Jaban Moore is a two-time All-American thrower for the Mules track and field team, taking fourth place in the hammer throw last year, and fourth in the indoor shot put this season… He has been named all-MIAA 10 times in his career and has won the MIAA shot put title indoors and outdoors… He is the No. 2 indoor shot putter in school history, No. 4 outdoor shot putter, No. 5 weight thrower, and No. 5 hammer thrower… He has qualified for nationals five times, and is currently an automatic qualifier in the outdoor shot and a provisional in hammer this spring… He has also been named an Academic All-American by ESPN the Magazine, as well as Deans List and Commisioners Academic Honor Roll three times… He is an Academic All-MIAA award winner as well, boasting a 3.42 undergraduate GPA and a perfect 4.00 graduate school GPA in physical education… He also has been a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee… The Raytown, Missouri product is the son of Bill and Valarie Moore.
Chris Matlock is the MIAA and Central Missouri all-time leader in saves with 22 for the Mules baseball squad… He was a second-team All-American last season, getting 11 saves to tie the UCM single season record… He was the MVP of the Central Regional and a member of the All-Tournament Team at the Division II World Series last season as well… At the World Series, he tossed 9.1 innings of scoreless relief in a 19 inning game against second-ranked Sonoma State, and didn’t allow a run while striking out 13 … He also set the MIAA record for consecutive scoreless innings at 40 and 2/3, the old record was 34…was named first-team all-conference and all-region last year… His career numbers include a 1.79 ERA, a 9-3 record, 137 strikeouts to only 15 walks in 100 innings of action, and an opponents batting average of only .156… This season he is expected to garner many of those same honors as he boasts 11 more saves, a 1.10 ERA, and an incredible 58 strikeouts compared to only 2 walks in 33 innings… He averages nearly two strikeouts an inning… He has been named MIAA pitcher of the week three times in his career as well… The Springfield, Missouri native is the son of Glen and Debbie Matlock…
