The Central Missouri Jennies had their season come to an end Thursday night with an 89-80 loss to Southwest Baptist in the first round of the MIAA Tournament. The Jennies finish the season with 14-14 record, having won nine of their final 13 games. The hot-handed Lady Bearcats shot 52.5-percent for the game, including 41 percent from behind the arc.

Like she has done many times before Kara Fleming took the opening tip and laid it in for a quick 2-0 Jennies lead. That would be one of only two leads, however, that the Jennies would have all night. SBU used a 10-4 run to take the lead before the Jennies responded with five unanswered points to take their final lead of the night at 11-10. The Lady Bearcats used a 9-1 run to open the largest lead of the half at 19-12. UCM hit a lull late in the opening half going 7:37 without a field goal, but UCM battled back to within three before SBU scored near the end of the half to go in with a 33-27 lead.

SBU opened the second half on a 6-0 run to open a 12-point lead. The Jennies got their first bucket of the half at the 17:00 mark to cut the lead to 10. UCM cut the lead to five on a layup by Deidra Dace, but the Lady Bearcats responded with a quick 5-0 run to push the lead back to 10.

The Jennies cut the lead to as little as four two different times in the second half, but could never quite get over the hump. SBU sank their free throws down the stretch for the 89-80 win.

UCM struggled from the field shooting 38 percent for the game, 45 percent in the second half. The Jennies were also uncharacteristically cold from the foul line shooting 60 percent, 20-of-33.

UCM was led by Lindsey Maple with 20 points, while Jojuana Jones scored 17 points to go along with her MIAA Tournament Record 21 rebounds. MIAA Freshman of the Year Fleming added 17 points and eight assists before fouling out and Dace added 13 points off the bench.

Maple finishes her career seventh on UCM’s all-time scoring list with 1,545 points, while Jones finishes with the seventh most rebounds in a season by a Jennie with 292.
