Jens lose opener

Jennies comeback falls short in
season opening setback

The Central Missouri Jennies basketball squad dropped their season opener 70-59 to Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Friday night at the Multipurpose Building.

The Jennies (0-1) – who trailed by as many as 23 points in the first half – used a strong second half surge to pull within seven with just over two minutes to play. The Jennies, however, couldn’t get any closer and SIUE made six of seven free throws in the final 1:46 to ice the game.

The Jennies cut the lead to three at the 15:00 mark of the first half, but the Cougars went on an 18-0 run over the next 5:22 to build a 30-9 lead. The lead grew to 23 at 38-15 before the Jens closed the gap to 41-24 at the break.

The lead grew to as high as 20 in the second half before the Jennies began to chip away. Stephenie Cook hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 10 with just under four to go. A free throw by Jojuana Jones and a layup from Lindsey Maple made it 63-56 with 2:13 to go, but that was as close as the Jennies would get.

Deidra Dace led the Jennies offensively with 17 points on five of eight shooting. Jones added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Defensively, the Jennies forced 22 turnovers, but committed 21 of their own.
