For the first time since 2002, a span of 14 games, the Central Missouri Jennies defeated the Washburn Lady Blues, 68-59 on Saturday afternoon in the Multipurpose Building. WU was ranked No. 17 in the nation and will now have to share the MIAA regular season title with Emporia State.
The Jennies (14-13, 9-9 MIAA) jumped out to a 14-4 start to the game thanks to 10 points from senior post Jojuana Jones, who started the game 5-of-5. The Lady Blues made their run though, thanks to a couple early fouls to Jones that sent her to the bench. WU cut it to 16-14 by the 8:58 mark and eventually grabbed a 25-23 advantage with 2:55 left in the half on a Karla Tailele fast break lay-in. Central Missouri drew even at 28 on a couple free throws from senior guard Lindsey Maple with four seconds remaining.
The two squads were tied at the break despite a 20-13 rebound advantage for WU and no three pointers for UCM. Washburn turned it over 11 times in the period though.
The second half was back and forth early before the Jennies took control at the 8:12 mark on a lay-up from Kara Fleming to make it 49-43. Central Missouri actually led for the final 15:08 of the game and got it to double digits with 5:41 left on a Maple bucket. She would score 11 points in the second stanza and hit 6-of-6 down the stretch from the line to seal the upset.
It was Slifer’s first win over the Lady Blues at Central Missouri.
UCM was led by Maple with 16 points while Fleming put up 15 on the night. Jones fouled out but still tallied 11 points in 15 minutes of action. Freshman Rebecca Roberts stepped up again though, and scored a career-high nine points.
The Lady Blues were led by Corkey Stiger with 19 points while Amanda Holmes had 16.
