The Central Missouri Jennies got off to a fast start and never trailed as they defeated Bellarmine (Ky.) University 55-48 in the first game of the Cruzin’ Classic on Wednesday afternoon in Miami Shores, Fla.

The Jennies (5-3) came out strong in the first half scoring the first seven points of the game before Bellarmine scored with 16:52 to go in the half. The Knights slowly cut into the Jennies’ lead as the half progressed.

Bellarmine cut the lead to one and had the ball with a chance to take the lead, but a turnover and a quick layup by Lindsey Maple gave the Jens a three point lead, 18-15. UCM extended the lead back to seven a couple of times before a layup by Maple with :06 left in the half gave the Jennies their biggest lead of the game at nine, 28-19. Bellarmine, however, drove the length of the floor for a layup at the buzzer and trimmed the lead back to seven and UCM went to the intermission with a 28-21 lead.

Bellarmine started the second half on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 28 with just over 17 minutes to play. Stephenie Cook hit two free throws to end the run and put the Jennies back in front at 30-28 with 16:58 to go. UCM pushed the lead back to five a couple times, but Bellarmine responded and cut the lead to two at 40-38 with just under nine minutes to play. The Knights had possession with a chance to tie or take the lead, but missed on consecutive shots. Back-to-back threes by Maple and Dominica Blakemore gave the Jennies a 46-38 lead with 6:16 to play.

Jojuana Jones hit a short jumper to give the Jennies their biggest lead of the game at 10, 48-38 with just under five minutes to play. Bellarmine responded, again, with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to three at 48-45 with 2:11 to play. Blakemore hit a big three with 1:45 to play to push the lead back to six at 51-45. Bellarmine got a quick layup to cut the lead to four and had a chance for more, but the Jennies defense forced a tough shot and Blakemore pulled down the rebound.

Maple hit four consecutive free throws and the Jennies made it an eight point game at 55-47 with :25 to play. The Knights hit one of two free throws with :18 left, but the Jennies were able to run out the clock on the next possession and come away with the 55-48 win.

Maple finished with 24 points to lead all scorers. Blakemore tallied 12 for the Jennies while Jones collected a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Jennies forced Bellarmine into 20 turnovers, a day after they set their own school record with just three turnovers in a victory over Gannon (Pa.) University.
