Mules add sixth player to 08-09 recruiting list

The University of Central Missouri Mules basketball team has now added six new players to their roster for the 2008-2009 season.


The University of Central Missouri Mules basketball team announced that center Deante Burgess has agreed to play for the Cardinal & Black in 2008-09.
Burgess is the sixth new addition to the Mules squad for the 08-09 campaign.

Detroit, Mich. * College of Eastern Utah

As a freshman, Burgess played for NJCAA Hall of Fame Coach Vertie Sails at Southwest Tennessee Community College the 2006-07 season… There the Saluqis were 27-6 and finished No. 16 in the country… As a starter that year, Burgess averaged 10 points, nearly 6 rebounds a game, and shot 52 percent from the field… His team was TJCAA Region VII Tournament champs and played for the NJCAA National Championship in Hutchinson, Kan...  He then completed his academic requirements at the College of Eastern Utah… Burgess also received an invite to Jerry Mullen’s Top 120 Camp and was in the Rivals Top 200 as one of the top junior college players in the country... As a prepster, Burgess played at Detroit’s Martin Luther King High School where he was third-team All-Detroit by the Detroit Free Press.

Kim Anderson on Deante Burgess:

"Deante is a solid inside player who can score around the basket.” Anderson said. “He has demonstrated the ability to be an excellent rebounder and defender. We felt we needed additional size and strength at the post position and Deante certainly will help us fill that role."


The University of Central Missouri Mules basketball team earlier announced that Division I transfer Alex Moosmann will wear the Cardinal & Black next season. He comes to UCM from Miami University (Ohio), where he played the last two seasons. Moosmann played his prep ball at St. Francis Borgia in Washington, Missouri.

A two-year starter for the Red Hawks and head coach Charlie Coles… as a freshman there, helped team to the MAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Oregon by two points in the first round… tied the school record with 33 games played in both his freshman and sophomore seasons… led the team in assists and ranked among the MAC leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio as a freshman… he was named the Arthur and Olga Atkins Freshman of the Year after averaging 4.3 points, 3 assists, and 25.6 minutes per game…

Attended St. Francis Borgia High School in Washington, Mo., playing for head coach Dave Neier… led the team to a 30-1 record and a Class 4 Missouri State Championship as a senior while averaging 23.4 points and 4.5 assists per game… earned all-state honors two times and was the St. Louis co-player of the year along with current Mules signee Sanijay Watts… was also the runner-up for Mr. Basketball in Missouri… the Academic All-State Player of the Year, he also played in the MBCA Hall of Fame and Riverwar All-Star Games… averaged 23 points per outing as a junior as well, hitting 62 percent from the field… he was a four-year letterman and three-year captain for the Knights as well… his father, Terry, played golf for the Mules… majoring in marketing and was a member of the National Honor Society.

"We are thrilled to have Alex join our program.  He was a highly decorated player for one of Missouri's best high school coaches at one of the state's finest high school programs, as well as a solid contributor at the Division I level.  We feel he will be an outstanding player in the MIAA with his ability to score, make plays, and play defense.  He is an excellent student and individual who we feel will have an immediate impact."


Warrensburg High School product D.J. Slifer has signed to play for Head Coach Kim Anderson and the Mules in 2008-09.

Warrensburg, Mo.  * Warrensburg High School

Played for head coach Chris Nimmo, earning Most Outstanding Player honors for the West Central Conference as a senior… averaged 16 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds per game in 2007-08 to earn all-state accolades… a three-time all-conference and two-time all-district selection, he also lettered all four years… his assist total ranks him 11th all-time in Missouri history… helped the Tigers claim the 2006 conference title and the 2006 and 2007 district championships… competed in the Kansas-Missouri and MBCA all-star games as well… also a cross-country runner, he grabbed all-state, all-district, and all-conference honors four times on the course... his father, Dave, is the head women’s basketball coach at Central Missouri while his mother, Tammy, serves as an assistant coach… his older sister Brittney has also signed to play with the Jennies basketball team next season as a junior.

"It's great that D.J. has decided to sign with our program.  He is a very well rounded point guard who can shoot the ball with great efficiency and distribute the ball to his teammates.  He has a great feel for the game having grown up in a basketball family.  He has already been working on increasing his strength and we feel he will be a solid four-year player for us."

Coach Anderson announced the addition of three student-athletes to join the squad in 2008-09 earlier this spring.

Louis Benson

6-4  *  190  *  Guard

Fort Meade, Md.  * New Mexico Junior College

Played for head coach James Voight, earning first team Western Junior College Athletic Conference as a sophomore and leading the region in scoring with just under 25 points per game… Average was good enough to rank fourth in the NJCAA Division I… Hit 83.5 percent from the charity stripe to rank fourth in the league, and placed fifth in threes made per game, averaging just more than three per contest… Benson also led his team in rebounding at five per outing while averaging three assists, hitting 51 percent from the field, and knocking down 40 percent from beyond the arc… Attended Prince George’s Community College as a freshman in Maryland and averaged 19.3 points per outing… played for head coach Butch Young at Meade Senior High School, earning first team All-Anne Arundel County two times.

"One of our objectives in recruiting this spring was to add another perimeter scoring threat.” Anderson said. “Louis certainly fills that role. He is an excellent shooter and solid rebounder. We feel he will be a great addition to our program."


Sanijay Watts

6-4  *  215  *  Forward

St. Louis, Mo.  *  State Fair Community College (Sedalia, Mo.)

Played for head coach Dale Ribble at State Fair last season, leading them to an 18-12 overall record… earned honorable mention NJCAA Division I All-American honors as a sophomore, leading the region and ranking 19th in the nation with 22 points per game… He was also named to the Region 16 first-team… averaged eight rebounds to rank fourth in the region, 2.7 assists to rank ninth, and 1.3 steals per game, good for 10th… a 71 percent free throw shooter, he also hit 51 percent from the field… As a freshman, he played at Cowley County Community College and scored 16.3 points per outing, 6.3 rebounds per game, and hit 60 percent from the field… attended Jennings High School in St. Louis where he played for head coach Randy Carter.

Zack Redel

6-6  * 225  *  Forward

St. Louis, Mo.  *  Webster Groves High School

Played for a UCM graduate in head coach Jay Blossom at Webster Groves High School… He helped his squad to the 2007-08 Missouri 5A State Championship, averaging 14.7 points and nine rebounds a game… He hit 62 percent from the field and 73 percent from the charity stripe as well for the Statesmen… Redel also scored 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the state title game… He boasts a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while also pitching for the baseball team.
