Mules add Benson

Mules add third newcomer for 08-09 campaign

The University of Central Missouri Mules basketball team has added a third new player to their roster for the 2008-2009 season.

Louis Benson

6-4  *  190  *  Guard

Fort Meade, Md.  * New Mexico Junior College

Played for head coach James Voight, earning first team Western Junior College Athletic Conference as a sophomore and leading the region in scoring with just under 25 points per game… Average was good enough to rank fourth in the NJCAA Division I… Hit 83.5 percent from the charity stripe to rank fourth in the league, and placed fifth in threes made per game, averaging just more than three per contest… Benson also led his team in rebounding at five per outing while averaging three assists, hitting 51 percent from the field, and knocking down 40 percent from beyond the arc… Attended Prince George’s Community College as a freshman in Maryland and averaged 19.3 points per outing… played for head coach Butch Young at Meade Senior High School, earning first team All-Anne Arundel County two times.

"One of our objectives in recruiting this spring was to add another perimeter scoring threat.” Anderson said. “Louis certainly fills that role. He is an excellent shooter and solid rebounder. We feel he will be a great addition to our program."

 

Coach Anderson announced the addition of two student-athletes to join the squad in 2008-09 earlier this spring.

Sanijay Watts

6-4  *  215  *  Forward

St. Louis, Mo.  *  State Fair Community College (Sedalia, Mo.)

Played for head coach Dale Ribble at State Fair last season, leading them to an 18-12 overall record… earned honorable mention NJCAA Division I All-American honors as a sophomore, leading the region and ranking 19th in the nation with 22 points per game… He was also named to the Region 16 first-team… averaged eight rebounds to rank fourth in the region, 2.7 assists to rank ninth, and 1.3 steals per game, good for 10th… a 71 percent free throw shooter, he also hit 51 percent from the field… As a freshman, he played at Cowley County Community College and scored 16.3 points per outing, 6.3 rebounds per game, and hit 60 percent from the field… attended Jennings High School in St. Louis where he played for head coach Randy Carter.

"We are excited to have Sanijay join our basketball program.” Anderson said. “He will bring us a solid inside presence that can score and rebound effectively.  He is an outstanding person and basketball player who has had tremendous coaching in both high school and junior college.  We feel he will contribute a great deal to our program"

 

Zack Redel

6-6  * 225  *  Forward

St. Louis, Mo.  *  Webster Groves High School

Played for a UCM graduate in head coach Jay Blossom at Webster Groves High School… He helped his squad to the 2007-08 Missouri 5A State Championship, averaging 14.7 points and nine rebounds a game… He hit 62 percent from the field and 73 percent from the charity stripe as well for the Statesmen… Redel also scored 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the state title game… He boasts a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while also pitching for the baseball team.

"Zack is a winner.  He is an excellent inside player with a solid perimeter jump shot and a good rebounder.” Anderson said. “He played for one of the best high school coaches in the state and we are thrilled to have someone of his potential join our basketball family.  He is an excellent student who we feel will help our program considerably over the next four years."
