Mules fall from MIAA Tourney with first round setback to Washburn

Joe Young fired in 26 points in the Mules effort
The Central Missouri Mules ran into the Washburn Ichabods on a hot shooting night and fell in the first round of the MIAA Tournament, 79-68 on Friday night at Municipal Auditorium.
The Ichabods (18-10) dominated on the glass 40-30 and drilled 11 three-pointers to grab the victory while the Mules (18-10) NCAA Tournament hopes came to an end.
Central Missouri jumped out early, starting the game on a 17-8 run before the Ichabods got back into it on the strength of an 8-0 run. UCM held on to the slim advantage until Andrew Meile hit a big three to tie it at 29 with 3:45 left in the half. Another three with 51 seconds left gave the Ichabods their first lead since the opening seconds of the game. The bucket propelled WU to a 35-33 halftime advantage.
Joe Young paced UCM with nine at the break while Meile led WU with 11. Central Missouri shot 40 percent in the period while the Ichabods drilled 48 percent. The Mules also hit all 12 of their free throw attempts in the period.
The Ichabods continued that into the second stanza, scoring the first six points. The Mules went cold from the line as well, hitting only two if their first eight charity tosses. Washburn took advantage, moving its lead to 13 by the 9:38 mark. Central Missouri never got closer than 11 after that.
Washburn shot 57 percent in the period and out-rebounded UCM 21-13 in the period. Young tried to keep the Mules in it, scoring 17 second half points, but the Ichabods had an answer every time. UCM hit only 11-of-20 from the line in the stanza as well.
Young finished the night with 26 points to lead all scorers while Skip Thomas recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Kevin Wollbrinck and De’Andre Byrd rounded out double figure scorers with 10 apiece.
