Mules fall short against fourth-ranked Rollins

Fred Dudley
Fred Dudley fired in a career high 16 points against Rollins

Central Missouri almost pulled off a big upset of the No. 4 Rollins College Tars in the championship game of the Las Vegas High Desert Classic, but it was too much Jonny Reibel in the end as he led them to an 83-79 win. The All-American senior had a game-high 30 points along with 10 rebounds and nine assists to grab tournament MVP honors.

It was a crazy game of runs and it looked as if the Tars would run away with the win, starting on a 23-5 spurt to open the contest. The Mules missed their first 10 shots but they would finish the half on a flurry. They proceeded to go on a 32-8 run over the next seven minutes to take a six point lead at the 4:19 mark. Seven three pointers from Fred Dudley, Joe Young, and De’Andre Byrd sparked the rally.

The Mules looked as if they would go into the break with a six point spread but Kevin Hogan drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer and was fouled for a four-point play to cut the UCM advantage to 45-43. Dudley had 14 at the break while Young picked up 11. Hogan and Reibel each had 13 for the Tars.

The second period was a whole different ball game though for the Mules. They went 0-for-8 from three while the Tars drilled 6-of-12 attempts, including three of those from Reibel. Even with the discrepancy, UCM expanded its lead with the emergence of the inside game. After being tied at 55, the Mules went on a 12-0 run, sparked by six points from Tremaine Luellen with just more than 11 minutes to play. Rollins fought back though, cutting the advantage to one by the 4:54 mark. Central Missouri held on for the next few minutes and was up by three with 2:43 left, but that would be the last time the Mules would score a point.

A Nick Wolf lay-in with 2:30 left cut it back to one and the two squads went on a drought until Reibel took it to the hole for the go-ahead bucket  with less than 30 seconds left. It was the first lead for Rollins since the first half, but that is all they needed as Dudley’s three attempt was off the mark and Reibel drilled his two free throws. Young’s tying three-point try with two seconds left was blocked to end the threat.

Young finished the day with 17 points to lead UCM while Dudley put up a career-high 16 in the outing. De’Andre Byrd also set a career-high with 11 points while Skip Thomas crashed the boards for nine rebounds.
