Mules rally for victory over Montevallo

Kevin Wollbrink recorded his first career double-double for the Mules in the win

The University of Central Missouri Mules made it five wins in a row at the Las Vegas High Desert Classic on Tuesday with a 66-60 come from behind win over Montevallo. Kevin Wollbrinck tallied his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mules.

Central Missouri (6-1) jumped out to a 14-6 lead early in the game over their Elite Eight opponent from last season, but the Falcons chipped away, tying it at 17 by the 6:09 mark. Montevallo got its first lead of the day a couple minutes later on a three from Shon Caston at 20-19. The Falcons extended that advantage to six with less than a minute to play but a De’Andre Byrd layup with seven seconds remaining sent the Mules into the break down 32-28.

Central Missouri’s recent shooting woes continued in the half as they drilled only 33 percent from the floor while the Falcons took 13 more shots and pulled down 12 offensive rebounds. Terrill Humphrey led UM with 11 first period points while Wollbrinck put up 10.

UCM tied it up early in the second stanza before Humphrey and Joe Young traded three pointers to knot it back at 38 with just over 16 minutes left. Central Missouri took control shortly after that though, going on a 7-0 run. The Mules would lead the rest of the day, getting their advantage to as many as 11 in the midpoint of the period.

Young and Tremaine Luellen led the second half attack, going for 10 and 11 respectively. The Mules also shot 48 percent in the period and out-rebounded the Falcons by a 21-to-16 margin. They also held UM to only 34 percent shooting in the game.

Poor free throw shooting by UCM kept the Falcons alive in the outing as they cut it to a two-point lead with just under five minutes remaining. Young answered for UCM though, nailing a three-pointer with 4:23 on the clock to stretch it back to five. Central Missouri hit five of its final six charity tosses to close out the game though.

Young finished the night with 15 while Luellen put up 14 on the day. Skip Thomas was big on the glass, pulling down a career-high 12 rebounds and registering four blocks. Humphrey led all scorers on the night though, with 23 points.
