Jennies go 1-0-1 in Comfort Inn Classic

Carrie Twellman had two goals and an assist to lead the Jennies in the Comfrot Inn Classic
The University of Central Missouri Jennies soccer squad capped off an undefeated weekend in the Comfort Inn/UCM Classic with a 1-0 upset of 17th ranked Central Oklahoma on Sunday. UCM also came from behind to tie Northeastern State (Okla.) 2-2 on Friday night.
Against NSU, the Jens allowed a goal at the 7:20 mark on a shot from about 35 yards out that lofted over sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Ponche. It would be one of only six shots on the night from the Riverhawks, compared to 17 for UCM. Junior Carrie Twellman got on the board next as Hazel Cox slotted a ball to her in the six yard box from the right side for the easy tap-in. The goal came with only 3:28 left in the opening period as the two squads went into the half tied at one.
The Riverhawks took the lead only 2:25 into the second stanza on a free kick that lofted over Ponche’s head. Twellman tallied her second of the night only two minutes later on a penalty kick though. The teams would remain tied the rest of the night as even two overtime periods wouldn’t be enough time. The Jens out-shot NSU 12-3 in the second half and overtime.
Against UCO, the Jens tallied a goal in the 56th minute from Landri Schmitt on a header from a Twellman cross. UCM had six shots on goal to the Bronchos two, and grabbed its second shutout win of the season. Ponche recorded her first shutout of the season as well, making two saves.
Central Missouri really clamped down in the second stanza as they out-shot UCO 7-4 and didn’t allow a shot on goal. The teams finished 10-10 in overall shots.
Central Missouri finished as the only unbeaten team in the classic and concluded the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 2-1-1 mark.
