Jennies open season with victory at Missouri Western
Senior Josie Vanwey (Wichita, Kan.) netted two goals in the first 6:14 of the ballgame to help the Jennies soccer team cruise to a 4-0 season debut win over the Griffons of Missouri Western today.
The Jens tallied all four goals in the first half including the first collegiate goal and assist from freshman Hazel Cox (Olathe, Kan.). The newcomer gave the Griffons fits in on the defensive end as she repeatedly beat players and created opportunities. It didn’t take long either as Cox found Vanwey on the far post only 2:46 into the opening period. Vanwey’s second strike came on a shot from the left side of the 18 yard box off a pass from sophomore Erin Hendrix (Overland Park, Kan.). Sophomore Jamie Lawrence (Olathe, Kan.) put the game to 3-0 with a shot over the MWSU keeper Ashley Harrel’s head, thanks to a centering pass from freshman Nina Fragale (St. Louis, Mo.) in the 35th minute. Cox capped the scoring in the 43rd minute after dribbling past a defender and slotting a blast in the left side netting.
The Jens out-shot the Griffons 26-4 and while sophomore goalkeeper Andrea Dixon (Sacramento, Calif.) recorded the win and shutout.
Central Missouri will kick off the home portion of the schedule this Friday when they play host to Minnesota-Crookston at 7:30 pm and Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday at 3:00 pm in the Holiday Inn Express/CMSU Classic.
