Jennies Soccer splits weekend in Kansas
The Jennies went to first place Washburn and grabbed a 2-1 sudden-death overtime win on Saturday but fell at Emporia State 2-0 after allowing both goals in the first 7:23.
Against the Lady Blues, CMSU went down 1-0 in the 39th minute off a tally from Jolene Silovsky. The Jennies would answer only two minutes later as Hazel Cox (Olathe, Kan.) knocked in a loose ball in the box from Whitney Maxwell (Kansas City, Mo.). The teams would go into the half knotted at one and tied 4-4 in shots. Neither team could get a goal in the second stanza so they went to overtime. The Jennies made a push toward the goal about five minutes into the period but sophomore Jamie Lawrence (Olathe, Kan.) was fouled away from the ball in the Washburn penalty box. The call was made and Carrie Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) finished her fourth penalty kick of the season and fifth game-winning goal of the year. Against Emporia State, the Jens allowed two early goals and couldn’t mount a comeback for a 2-0 loss on Sunday. Despite out-shooting the Hornets 17-11 overall and 11-6 on goal, CMSU failed to convert. ESU goalkeeper Megan Martin had 11 saves on the day to get the shutout. Twellman led the offense for the Jennies with five shots in the outing. Goalkeeper Andrea Dixon (Sacramento, Calif.) made seven saves during the weekend.
