Jennies soccer claws past Southwest Baptist, 1-0
In what turned out to be a very physical soccer game the Central Missouri Jennies picked up a big road win over Southwest Baptist, 1-0 on Tuesday in Bolivar, Mo.
Central Missouri scored the lone goal of the contest in the 64th minute when Landri Schmitt took a pass at midfield and dribbled down the far side and crossed the ball into the box to Melanie Hall, who then passed it to Hazel Cox, she faked out the keeper and drilled a shot into the center of the goal. The Jens had a chance to extend the lead almost eight minutes later when Hall took a shot at an open goal, but it went wide. SBU turned up the offensive pressure and almost got the equalizer in the 81st minute, but the shot from 30 yards out was a little high and went over the crossbar.
In the opening half, the match was a defensive struggle with each side having scoring opportunities. The Jens out shot the Bearcats 5-3 in the opening frame putting two on goal compared to only one for Southwest Baptist.
For the game UCM held a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 3-2 margin for shots on goal. A total of 31 fouls were called between the squads and three yellow cards were handed out by the official. Liz Casey made two saves to pick up her third shutout of the season.
