Jennies sweep MIAA twinbill from TSU

Megan Leonard picked up both wins in the circle and hit a game-winning homerun for UCM

The Central Missouri Jennies softball team opened MIAA play with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Truman State on Tuesday afternoon at Jennies Field. UCM took game one 4-0 then rallied to win the nightcap 5-3 on a walk-off home run.

The Jennies (16-12, 2-0 MIAA) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in game one with a couple of first inning runs. Melissa Palmer led off the game with a double to right center, then following a pop-up, Tracey Anderson belted a two-run home run to right field. UCM tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on first and second and two out, Tarese Ely-Myers singled to right. The Truman right fielder misplayed the ball and it rolled all the way to the wall, allowing two runs to score and Ely-Myers to reach third.

Megan Leonard was solid in the circle for the Jennies. She threw seven scoreless innings, scattering five hits to earn her eighth win of the season. Anderson finished two-for-two with two RBI and Palmer added two hits as well.

Just as they did in game one the Jennies jumped out to an early lead in game two with single runs in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. Palmer singled to lead off the game, stole second then reached third on a ground out and scored on a fielder’s choice. Kherri-Dean Hummer belted a one-out home run in the bottom of the second to push the Jennies in front 2-0.

Kristal Holland was sailing along in the circle, but ran into trouble in the sixth. She allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning, following a line-out she surrendered a three-run home run and Truman went in front 3-2. Leonard came on in relief and retired the next two batters to end the inning. The Jennies responded in the bottom half of the sixth when Ely-Myers smacked her fourth round-tripper of the season to tie the game at 3.

After a scoreless top of the sixth, the Jennies put a runner on second with one out thanks to a Hummer double. After a Truman pitching change, Leonard smashed a walk-off home run to right field to give UCM the 5-3 win.

Leonard picked up her second win of the day in game two and improved her record to 9-3. Ely-Myers was three-for-three in game two, while Hummer added two hits.
