Jennies fall in extra innings in MIAA Tournament Championship round

The Central Missouri Jennies bid for an MIAA softball tournament title ended with a 14-inning setback to Emporia State. The Hornets scored four times in the top of the fourteenth inning for the 4-0 win.

The Jennies (36-20) were unable to muster any offense against Emporia State starter Samantha Sheeley, the MIAA Pitcher of the Year. Sheeley held the Jennies hitless over 13 innings before Katie Bauer stroked a single to left field to leadoff the 14th.

UCM starter Megan Leonard was almost as good in the circle. Leonard tossed 12 shutout innings, scattering eight hits with 14 strikeouts.

The Jennies had a golden opportunity to win the game in the 11th. After two walks to start the inning, Bauer laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out. However, Angela Selby was picked off of third and Whitney Sandberg was retired to end the inning. UCM also had a runner in scoring position with one out in the 13th, but again the Jennies were unable to score.

Emporia loaded the bases with no outs in the 14th thanks to a leadoff single, an error and a bunt single. Jennies’ reliever Kelly Martin was able to get the next two batters out, but Lady Hornets’ third baseman Miranda Campbell smacked a double over the head of centerfielder Melissa Palmer, plating two runs. The next batter laced a single to right scoring two more runs and giving ESU the 4-0 lead. Martin (3-2) was tagged with the loss allowing four unearned runs in the 14th.
