The University of Central Missouri Jennies and head coach Susan Anderson have announced the next class that will don the Cardinal and Black. Four high school standouts and one junior college transfer will join the squad for the 2010 season.

“We have recruited great student-athletes who have a lot of versatility and will bring a tremendous amount of potential and competitiveness to our program” Anderson said, “Each one of these student-athletes comes from very strong and successful high school or junior college programs. They also have experience playing in highly successful summer softball programs.”

Joining the Jennies for the 2010 season will be Ashlea Bengtson of Wichita, Kan., Brandi Campbell of Washburn, Mo., Sarah Espy of Olathe, Kan., Andrea McNair of St. Louis, Mo. and Heather VanHyning of Colona, Ill.

Ashlea Bengtson

Bengtson, a 5-9 outfielder and the daughter of Scott and Kim Bengtson is currently attending Wichita Heights High School where she holds the school record for most hits in a single-season. She is a three-time All-City selection and was a member of conference championship teams in both softball and volleyball.

“The first time we saw Ashlea was at our summer camp and we were impressed by her athleticism and her ability to track down the ball in the outfield. She is a quality student-athlete and will be a great addition to our program. She was also an all-state volleyball player in Kansas, so we are thrilled that she chose softball for college.” said Coach Anderson.

Brandi Campbell

Campbell is currently attending McDonald County High School where she is a four-year letterwinner, earning All-conference and all-district honors four times and was named second team all-state in 2008. She led the Lady Mustangs in batting her senior season with a .494 average while guiding MCHS to a 23-7 record and a district title. She was also a two-year letterwinner in basketball and received the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Academic Performance the past three years.

“Brandi has tremendous speed and quickness and is a tough player. As soon as you see her on the field you can see how much she loves the game. She is a versatile athlete that can play middle infield or outfield. She will be a spark plug for our team and hopefully a great base stealer as well.”

Sarah Espy

Espy is currently attending Olathe North High School where she was named All-Olathe First team and second team all-Sunflower league as a freshman and sophomore. She was a first team All-league, All-Metro and 6A All-State honoree as a junior. Espy had an 18-3 record with a 0.29 ERA in 2008. She plays her summer ball for the KC Peppers GOLD.

“Sarah is one of the top pitchers in this area. We are excited to have her joining our pitching staff. She is a highly competitive person and very energetic. She has pitched for the KC Peppers the past few years and has faced some great competition at the gold level. She definitely held her own at the Gold National Tournament this past summer. We look for her to step in and make an impact right away.”

Andrea McNair

Currently attending Timberland/Wentzville High School she is a four-time all-conference performer, including three straight years on the first team. She is also a four-year all-academic selection for a team that won four consecutive conference titles, two district titles and finished third in the state in 2005.

“Andrea is a talented player from St. Louis who has a lot of versatility and can play shortstop, third base or in the outfield. She is a player that will bring energy and speed to our team. We saw her at our UCM high school tournament and were impressed by her athleticism, smooth glove and her bat. We think her best softball days are ahead of her.”

Heather VanHyning

VanHyning is currently attending Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was a second team all-region selection last year after batting .374 in 49 games. Originally from Colona, Ill. she was a four-year varsity letterwinner and a two-time first team all-conference selection at Geneseo High School. She was named team MVP and Metro Player of the Year following her senior season.

“Heather is our only junior college recruit and she certainly is a good one. She has already gained valuable experience in the college game and will help us with the catching duties. She has a strong arm, great sense for the game and is a leader on the field. She also is a good solid hitter.”
