Mules place three at Midwest Classic

The Central Missouri Mules grapplers opened the 2008 portion of their schedule with three place winners at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. over the weekend. As a team, UCM finished in 13th place with 42.5 points.

The Mules’ top finisher was freshman Kenzie McClain with a fourth-place finish at 149 pounds. UCM had two seventh place finishers in Travis Barbarick and Jeremy Hudson at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively.

McClain won his first match over the No. 8 seed Chad Kubasch of St. Cloud State 4-1; he then received a medical forfeit over the No. 1 seed Mike Rogers of Carson Newman. McClain was defeated in the semifinals 12-0 by the No. 4 seed Joey Deaguero of Adams State. McClain then defeated seventh-seeded Mike Wubbena of Augustana 2-1 in the consolation semifinals before dropping the third place match 8-0 to Zack McKendree of Gannon.

Barbarick began his tournament with a 3-1 win over eighth-seeded Ben Plowman of Ohio Northern before falling to the No. 1 seed Evan Copeland of Adams State, 5-1. In the wrestle backs, Barbarick took down the No. 6 seed Johnny Sinchok of Campbellsville 3-2 then lost 7-2 to the No. 5 seed Kevin Flinn of Indianapolis. Barbarick defeated Joby Shreckhise of Limestone 5-2 in the seventh place match.

Hudson finished the tournament with a 3-2 record. He opened with a 20-10 win over Drew Swick of Ohio Northern then dropped a 10-2 match to the No. 2 seed Dan Scanlan of Limestone in the quarterfinals. Hudson defeated Derek Garris of UNC-Pembroke 13-6 in his wrestle back then fell 10-3 to sixth-seeded Hiram Smith of Findlay. Hudson won a 7-4 decision over Beau Severtson of Augustana in the seventh place match.
